Apple fell to the altar? Huawei replaced it as the world's second largest mobile phone manufacturer
Issue Time:2018-08-01
Although the latest earnings report indicates that Apple's second quarter results were strong, analysis by several research institutions showed that the giant lost its position as the world's second largest mobile phone manufacturer.

Instead, China's Huawei. This is the conclusion of the market research organization IDC, Counterpoint Research, IHS Markit and Canalys. This conclusion is based on Apple and Huawei's smartphone shipments as of June 30.

According to the preliminary calculation data of IDC, Huawei shipped about 54.2 million units in the second quarter, an increase of 40.9% year-on-year. In the same period, Apple's financial report showed that its mobile phone shipments in the second quarter were 41.3 million units, which was lower than the previous market expectation of 41.79 million units, a slight increase of 0.7% year-on-year.

Based on this calculation, Huawei's share of the global smartphone market is about 15.8%, while Apple's is 12.1%.

IDC pointed out that this is the first time that Apple has not become the first or second smartphone company in terms of market share since the second quarter of 2010.

Research firm CysRs attributed Huawei's outstanding performance to the strong sales of the flagship P20 and the success of its Honor brand. Huawei sold 4 million glory handsets in markets outside China, a surge of 150% year-on-year.

CNBC quoted Analyst's Shanghai-based analyst Mo Jia as saying that despite the failure to successfully establish a partnership with AT&T earlier this year, Huawei quickly reversed its direction and no longer focused on profitability, focusing on sales growth of low-end brands. . Glory has always been a major brand in the Chinese market, but its overseas market share has not been high, but now it plays a key role in the group strategy.

As of now, South Korea's Samsung still holds the largest share of the global smartphone market. According to IDC data, Samsung's mobile phone shipments in the second quarter were 71.5 million units, with a market share of 20.9%.

However, as Wall Street saw yesterday, Samsung’s smartphone business is declining, and its mobile phone shipments have fallen by 10.4% annually. It may continue to be in trouble in the coming quarters.

The financial report released yesterday showed that Samsung's second-quarter net profit fell to 10.98 trillion won (about 9.8 billion US dollars), lower than the previous market expectations of 11.6 trillion won. Among them, the profit of the mobile sector fell by 34% year-on-year, dragging down performance. The chip business has become the company's biggest source of profit, a 45% year-on-year increase.
